History of Hair Transplant and how it was evolved. This e magazine will describe briefly about the the history of hair transplant.
Hair Transplant first started in Japan in the year 1930 when Dr. Okumura first transplanted hair over the eyebrow and eyelash as the treatment of burnt patients. It did not develop as a mode of treatment for male pattern baldness until the year 1950 when Dr. Norman Orentreich planted the first graft in balding areas. Techniques progressed from there and follicular unit transplantation (FUT) become the first popular method used for hair transplant. FUT is also known as the strip harvesting method whereby the skin from the donor area is cut in a form of a strip and follicles are then extracted from the skin. Early failures using this method was improvised with emergence of ISHRS (International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery) where doctors could share their knowledge and skills to others .
DEVELOPMENT OVER LAST 10 YEARS
In 1990s Australian physician Dr Ray Wood and his sister Dr Angela Campbell created the FUE method (Follicular Unit Extraction) which is the most widely used method in todays hair transplant procedure. The FUE method in comparison to FUT has many advantages with minimal scarring being the first on that list.
